CHALLENGE COLORADO THERAPEUTIC RIDING PROGRAM
Mission Statement It is our belief that every special needs person has the potential to learn and achieve at his or her own level. By providing the opportunity to strengthen their communication skills, physical, emotional, and mental abilities, we provide the person with the opportunity to become a productive member of their community.
CCTRP co-founder Milena Pastore rides Jonah in the annual Ski High Stampede Parade. Who we are Bridges of Health Inc.'s Challenge Colorado Therapeutic Riding Program (CCTRP) is a local non-profit program that uses traditional tools combined with the equine as a strategy to assist children with special needs in the San Luis Valley Area. The program has been in existence for more than 10 years. Currently the program offers equine assisted therapy EAT (for a definition of Equine Assisted Therapy(EAT) go to the Education page to the FYI Definition) and some limited Hippotherapy. How it works Equine movement provides multidimensional movement, which is variable, rhythmic and repetitive. The horse provides a dynamic base of support, making it an excellent tool for increasing trunk strength and control, balance, building overall postural strength and endurance, addressing weight bearing, and motor planning. Equine movement offers well-modulated sensory input to vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile and visual channels. American Hippotherpy Association. More about our program The CCTRP budget is all based on donations, small grants, and fundraisers. Alpine Veterinary Hospital provides veterinary care and supplies free of charge. Occasionally CCTRP uses the public arena. Rio Grande County Commissioners allow the use of McMullen arena at no charge. The city of Monte Vista allows the use of handicap accessible bathrooms. The Monte Vista High School Industrial Maintenance and Shop class have equipped us with saddle racks, mounting steps, and a mounting ramp to help with the therapy sessions. Currently four horses and one pony are a part of our program. Local community members, high school students, and college students volunteer and are a great asset to the program. How you can help?
